Map & Compass Level 1

MAP AND COMPASS LEVEL 1    

Hike, snowshoe, geocache, hunt, and enjoy the woods and fields of Maine with confidence that you can read a topographic map, understand the symbols, know which way a river flows, plot a course bearing, use online resources, and how to get to safety.  Familiarization to using a compass and map outdoors included. Students must have a DeLorme Maine Gazetteer, and a 2-degree baseplate compass.

Class meets Live Online by Zoom over two sessions

I am a Master Maine Guide who has been guiding for over 40 years, running my own full year guiding business (Alice's Awesome Adventures), former Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Guides Board Examiner, and 1:1 trainer. Many current Registered Maine Guides trained with me. I  have been a teacher in public education, adult education, online education, and for non-profit organizations since 1968.

Basic Beginner Welding

Have you ever thought about fabricating with metals? Maybe as a craft/hobby, or the start of a new business venture down the road? If you answered yes, then our new Basic Beginner Welding class is the right fit for you! The class will cover stick (SMAW) welding including learning how to weld different types of joints together, how to use the large range of supporting equipment (brushes, sanders, grinders, etc.), and the various welding processes with a focus on safety first.

The class will meet for 8 (mostly) consecutive Thursday evenings from 5:30 to 8:30 pm beginning on March 27th running to May 22nd.

No class on 4/24 (school vacation week)

Developing A Personal & Home Protection Plan

DEVELOPING A PERSONAL AND HOME DEFENSIVE PROTECTION PLAN

This three-hour course is NOT about installingan alarm system. It is about adjusting your awareness around you as you move through your day and your home. It is about doing mental exercises to handle the “What if’s” to keep you and your loved ones safe. Learn situational awareness, conflict avoidance, and how to access your home’s defense.

Part 1 of a 2-part series but can be taken separately.

Needle Felting for Beginners: Make a Gnome

Come learn the basics of needle felting and make an adorable gnome about 6 inches tall that will fit in the palm of your hand!  This course is designed for beginners, but those with needle felting experience are welcome.  Fiber color options will be available to choose from, so you can customize your gnome to your liking.  Materials Fee $15.00 to the instructor at the beginning of the class—cash or check.  All materials will be provided. Storm make-up date will be April _16___, please mark your calendar just in case. 

Limit 10 students.

Painting Flower Portraits in Watercolor -Retreat at Homeport Inn, Searsport, Maine

 It starts at 1pm on April 11 and ends at 11am on April 14.

 Paint flower portraits realistically. You will paint pictures of flowers in detail, but more painterly than a scientific illustration. We won’t count veins, but we will count petals! Painting flowers is a wonderful exercise in observation.

Learn brush stroke and value

Iris, narcissus, orchids, tulips, and other spring flowers.

Materials list;

We will paint on smooth paper; Strathmore Series 500, one hundred percent cotton paper, either plate or vellum. This paper can be bought at Artist and Craftsman in Portland in large sheets, which we will cut up.

Bring a #2 round brush and a #6 round brush, pencil, palette, tube watercolors in the 3 primary colors and perhaps a green. Paper towels and water container. And bring a plant or flower specimen with no more than 9 petals. This is a slow and careful process and 9 petals and some leaves is enough happiness for us all.

Your instructor, Mary Laury is an accomplished watercolorist and highly esteemed teacher. She encourages all her students to believe they can be successful. Painting is an exciting medium; it flows and moves and does beautiful things. If you have never painted in watercolors, we will start at the beginning. If you have painted before, you will pick up some new tips and tricks as well. We all learn together!

NEW COURSE (part of the Registered Maine Guide Course but open to anyone)

One day on-water workshop for canoeing and SUP skills that everyone oughtto know but don’t. Learn how to transport canoes & SUP’s properly, how to launch & recover, strokes for tandem andsolo canoe paddling & SUP’ing. Learn rescues especially after capsizing. You will go swimming so you are required towear a wetsuit or drysuit to participate. Limited rentals are available with advance notice. You will bring your own lunch,canoe, paddle, life jacket, and enthusiasm. SUP’s will be provided. Limited rentals are available for canoes with advancenotice.

This three-hour course is for firearm owners andnonowners. You’ll learn what to do when you see an attack or if you are attacked and respond with force. You’ll learnhow to contact the first responders, how prosecutors might view what you did, rules about concealed carry in the USand Maine, and various ways to protect yourself without using a firearm.
