Brazilian Portuguese & Culture: Part One - New!

Calendar Jan 24, 2018 at 6 pm, runs for 7 weeks

Learn the basics of the Brazilian Portuguese language and gain a cultural background of Brazil and its rhythms. Be ready for a highly interactive and fun class with music, dance, food, and lots of energy! You will get an understanding from inside out of this amazing country and its people! Be ready to learn how to dance Samba and how to make “Feijoada” (bean stew).

7 Wednesdays, 6-8 pm

Supply fee $10, payable to instructor

Instructor Bio: Born in Brazil, Mrs. Barley graduated from Universidade de Uberaba (UNIUBE) and earned her bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. After her arrival in Maine in 1998, she started teaching Portuguese at UMO and SMCC. In 2012 she became a certified Spanish teacher, and is currently teaching Spanish at Maranacook Middle School.

Calendar Apr 4, 2018 at 6 pm, runs for 7 weeks

The influence of Brazilian indigenous people and immigrants from Angola, Mozambique, Italy, Germany, and Japan made Brazil a diverse and rich country. You will continue the experience of learning more about Brazilian Portuguese language and an authentic Brazilian dish (fish stew with coconut milk) will be served after learning about its origin. If you want to plan a visit to Brazil there is possibility of traveling to this beautiful country in July 2018.

Do you sing in the car or by yourself? Love music but hesitant to sing in front of others? It’s time to get beyond all that and make a joyful noise! Martin Swinger, accomplished vocalist and musician, leads you safely and gently through vocal warm-ups, vocal techniques, games for hearing and matching pitch and creative singing games! Students report greater confidence in their own voices and enjoy singing together. Class is intended for adults and socially mature young people who ‘think’ they can’t sing!

Martin performs 80+ gigs a year sharing award-winning original songs and a surprisingly eclectic mix of covers: Americana, swing & jazz, traditional, show tunes, klezmer, and improvisational music. He’s known for his sterling performance and vocal range, brilliant songs delivered well with an engaging stage presence for adult and family audiences.

Songs inspire hope, unite people, express feelings, create moods and challenge thinking. If you have ideas or stories you’d like to share, you'll enjoy this safe and fun opportunity to write your own songs. We'll review basic songwriting structure, learn about lyric development, explore creative writing and learn to hear and offer supportive feedback. Beginners and experienced songwriters can all benefit. The ability to read music, sing beautifully or play instruments is helpful but not required.
